Winter Citrus explores the quiet intensity of color against the cool restraint of winter light. The deep crimson flesh of the fruit glows from within, surrounded by warm ochres and pale rinds, set against a field of cool blue-violet shadow. The contrast between warmth and coolness creates a sense of illumination that feels both intimate and seasonal, like a small source of brightness held carefully against the stillness of winter.
This painting was built through layered, deliberate brushwork, allowing each stroke to describe both structure and atmosphere. Rather than smoothing the surface, the brush marks remain visible, preserving the immediacy of observation and the physical presence of paint itself. The firm surface of the birch panel supports this clarity, allowing crisp edges and subtle transitions in temperature and value.
This piece is part of my ongoing exploration of still life as a way to understand light, form, and emotional presence. Citrus in winter carries a particular resonance. It is a reminder of warmth, color, and vitality during the quietest season of the year.
